Let’s give thanks for the
finished work of Christ. He paid the price for sin in full. And so he could cry
out from the cross: “It is finished!” (John 19:30) – “Complete! Accomplished!
Achieved! Done!”. As the hymn puts it: “All that is needful hath been.” There’s
nothing more We need to DO because CHRIST has DONE it all. We receive his
finished work with the empty hand of faith. We bring our sin; he brings full
and free purification.
We’re reminded of the
sufficiency of Christ’s sacrifice in the Communion service: he “made there by his one oblation of
himself once offered a full, perfect and sufficient sacrifice, oblation and
satisfaction for the sins of the whole world;”.
John assures us that “the
blood of Jesus, his [God’s] Son purifies us from all sin”. He “purifies us from
all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:7, 10)
