Apostles Creed Lent Course - Session 2 - Bible verses

Bodle Street Green, Dallington & Warbleton - Apostles’ Creed Lent Course 2012 – Session 2

“I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.”

Some relevant Bible passages

“Jesus”

Matthew 1:21 – “…you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."

“Christ”

1 Samuel 24:6 – “the LORD’s anointed”

Matthew 2:2 - "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him."

“born of the Virgin Mary”

Isaiah 7:14 – “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.”

Matthew 1:18-25

Luke 1:34-35 - "How will this be," Mary asked the angel, "since I am a virgin?" 35 The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.”

Hebrews 4:15 - For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathise with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are--yet was without sin.

Romans 8:3 - For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in sinful man

1 Timothy 2:5 - For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,

John 1:18 - No-one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father's side, has made him known.

Isaiah 45:21-22 - there is no God apart from me, a righteous God and a Saviour; there is none but me. 22 "Turn to me and be saved, all you ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other.

Romans 5:12-20 – Jesus and Adam compared

1 Corinthians 15:21-22 -  For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. 22 For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.
1 Corinthians 15:45-49 - So it is written: "The first man Adam became a living being"; the last Adam, a life-giving spirit. 46 The spiritual did not come first, but the natural, and after that the spiritual. 47 The first man was of the dust of the earth, the second man from heaven. 48 As was the earthly man, so are those who are of the earth; and as is the man from heaven, so also are those who are of heaven. 49 And just as we have borne the likeness of the earthly man, so shall we bear the likeness of the man from heaven.

Genesis 1:26-28 - Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground." 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. 28 God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground."

Psalm 8

Hebrews 2:5-9 - It is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking. 6 But there is a place where someone has testified: "What is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? 7 You made him a little lower than the angels; you crowned him with glory and honour 8 and put everything under his feet." In putting everything under him, God left nothing that is not subject to him. Yet at present we do not see everything subject to him. 9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honour because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

Hebrews 2:14 - Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death--that is, the devil--

Hebrews 2:17-18 - For this reason he had to be made like his brothers in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people. 18 Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

Mark 3:31; 6:3 – Jesus’ brothers and sisters

Matthew 1:25 - But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son.

Ex 26:31-35 – the curtain in front of The Most Holy Place

Dt 21:23 quoted in Gal 3:13, Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree."

Rm 3:25 - God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement [KJV, ESV: propitiation], through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished

1 Jn 2:2 - He is the atoning sacrifice [propitiation] for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.

1 John 4:10 - This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice [propitiation] for our sins.

Rm 5:9-11 - Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God's wrath through him! 10 For if, when we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! 11 Not only is this so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

Eph 1:7 - In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace

Rm 3:24 - and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.

Rev 5:9 - And they sang a new song: "You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased men for God from every tribe and language and people and nation.

Mk 10:45 - For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

Jn 15:13 - Greater love has no-one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.

Rm 5:8 - But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Col 2:13-15 - When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, 14 having cancelled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross. 15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.

1 Pt 2:21ff - For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. 22 He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. 23 When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. 24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. 25 For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.

 “dead”

Rm 6:23 - For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Mk 15:44-45 - Pilate was surprised to hear that he was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him if Jesus had already died. 45 When he learned from the centurion that it was so, he gave the body to Joseph.

Jn 19:31-35 - Now it was the day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jews did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down. 32 The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other. 33 But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus' side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water. 35 The man who saw it has given testimony, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe.

“buried”

Is 53:9 - He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death, though he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth.

Mt 27:57-60 - As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus. 58 Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus' body, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him. 59 Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60 and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut out of the rock. He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb and went away.

Heb 9:24-26 - For Christ did not enter a man-made sanctuary that was only a copy of the true one; he entered heaven itself, now to appear for us in God's presence. 25 Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own. 26 Then Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But now he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself.

Acts 2:27 - because you will not abandon me to the grave [hades], nor will you let your Holy One see decay.

Rm 10:6-7 - But the righteousness that is by faith says: "Do not say in your heart,`Who will ascend into heaven?'" (that is, to bring Christ down) 7 "or`Who will descend into the deep?'" (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).

Eph 4:8-9 - This is why it says: "When he ascended on high, he led captives in his train and gave gifts to men." 9 (What does "he ascended" mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions?

1 Pt 4:6 - For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead, so that they might be judged according to men in regard to the body, but live according to God in regard to the spirit.

1 Pt 3:18-20 - For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit, 19 through whom also he went and preached to the spirits in prison 20 who disobeyed long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water,
