The Apostles’ Creed Lent Course session
(3):
“On
the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven,
he
is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living
and the dead.”
Some relevant Bible verses
“On the third day he rose again;”
1 Cor 15
the gospel accounts of the resurrection e.g.
Jn 20 or Mt 27:57-28:20.
1 Cor 15:3-8 - For what I received I passed on
to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the
Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third
day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Peter,
and then to the Twelve. 6 After that, he appeared to more than five
hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though
some have fallen asleep. 7 Then he appeared to James, then to all
the apostles, 8 and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one
abnormally born.
Mk 15:47 - Mary Magdalene and Mary the
mother of Joses saw where he was laid.
Jn 20:5-7 - He bent over and looked in at the
strips of linen lying there but did not go in. 6 Then Simon Peter,
who was behind him, arrived and went into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen
lying there, 7 as well as the burial cloth that had been around
Jesus' head. The cloth was folded up by itself, separate from the linen.
Mt 27:62-66 - The next day, the one after
Preparation Day, the chief priests and the Pharisees went to Pilate. 63
"Sir," they said, "we remember that while he was still alive
that deceiver said,`After three days I will rise again.' 64 So give
the order for the tomb to be made secure until the third day. Otherwise, his
disciples may come and steal the body and tell the people that he has been
raised from the dead. This last deception will be worse than the first." 65
"Take a guard," Pilate answered. "Go, make the tomb as secure as
you know how." 66 So they went and made the tomb secure by
putting a seal on the stone and posting the guard.
Lk 24:11 – But they did not believe the
women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense.
Lk 24:20-24 - The chief priests and our rulers
handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; 21
but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what
is more, it is the third day since all this took place. 22 In
addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning
23 but didn't find his body. They came and told us that they had
seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. 24 Then some of our
companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him
they did not see."
Mk 15:44-45 - Pilate was surprised to hear that
he was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him if Jesus had already
died. 45 When he learned from the centurion that it was so, he gave
the body to Joseph.
Jn 19:30-35 - When he had received the drink,
Jesus said, "It is finished." With that, he bowed his head and gave
up his spirit. 31 Now it was the day of Preparation, and the next
day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jews did not want the bodies left
on the crosses during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken
and the bodies taken down. 32 The soldiers therefore came and broke
the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of
the other. 33 But when they came to Jesus and found that he was
already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 Instead, one of the
soldiers pierced Jesus' side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and
water. 35 The man who saw it has given testimony, and his testimony
is true. He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also
may believe.
1 Cor 15:12 - But if it is preached that Christ
has been raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no
resurrection of the dead?
Rom 6:9 - For we know that since Christ was
raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over
him.
1 Cor 15:54-57 - When the perishable has been
clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying
that is written will come true: "Death has been swallowed up in
victory." 55 "Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O
death, is your sting?" 56 The sting of death is sin, and the
power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God! He gives us the
victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Acts 2:24 - But God raised him from the dead,
freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to
keep its hold on him.
Rom 4:25 - He was delivered over to death
for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.
Eph 2:5-6 – God … made us alive with Christ even
when we were dead in transgressions--it is by grace you have been saved. 6
And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms
in Christ Jesus,
Col 2:12-13 - having been buried with him in
baptism and raised with him through your faith in the power of God, who raised
him from the dead. 13 When you were dead in your sins and in the
uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He
forgave us all our sins,
Col 3:1-3 - Since, then, you have been raised
with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the
right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly
things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in
God.
Rom 6:4-5 - We were therefore buried with him
through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the
dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. 5
If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also
be united with him in his resurrection.
Rom 8:11 - And if the Spirit of him who
raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead
will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.
Acts 2:32 - God has raised this Jesus to
life, and we are all witnesses of the fact.
Acts 2:36 - Therefore let all Israel be
assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and
Christ."
Rom 1:4 - and who through the Spirit of
holiness was declared with power to be the Son of God, by his resurrection from
the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord.
Ps 8
1 Cor 15:44b-49 - it is sown a natural body, it is
raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual
body. 45 So it is written: "The first man Adam became a living
being"; the last Adam, a life-giving spirit. 46 The spiritual
did not come first, but the natural, and after that the spiritual. 47
The first man was of the dust of the earth, the second man from heaven. 48
As was the earthly man, so are those who are of the earth; and as is the man
from heaven, so also are those who are of heaven. 49 And just as we
have borne the likeness of the earthly man, so shall we bear the likeness of
the man from heaven.
Gen 1:26-28 - Then God said, "Let us make
man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea
and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all
the creatures that move along the ground." 27 So God created
man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he
created them. 28 God blessed them and said to them, "Be
fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the
fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that
moves on the ground."
2 Cor 5:17 - Therefore, if anyone is in
Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!
Col 1:18 - And he is the head of the body,
the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that
in everything he might have the supremacy.
1 Cor 15:20 - But Christ has indeed been raised
from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep
Mt 28:20 - surely I am with you always, to
the very end of the age.
Heb 7:24-25 - because Jesus lives for ever, he
has a permanent priesthood. 25 Therefore he is able to save
completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to
intercede for them.
Rom 8:34 - Who is he that condemns? Christ
Jesus, who died--more than that, who was raised to life--is at the right hand
of God and is also interceding for us.
1 Pet 1:3 - Praise be to the God and Father
of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a
living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
Eph 1:19-20 - … his incomparably great power for
us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, 20
which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at
his right hand in the heavenly realms,
Phil 3:10-11 - I want to know Christ and the power
of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming
like him in his death, 11 and so, somehow, to attain to the
resurrection from the dead.
1 Cor 15:58 - Therefore, my dear brothers,
stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of
the Lord, because you know that your labour in the Lord is not in vain.
1 Cor 6:14 - By his power God raised the Lord
from the dead, and he will raise us also.
1 Thess 4:14 - We believe that Jesus died and
rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have
fallen asleep in him.
Acts 17:31 - For he has set a day when he will
judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of
this to all men by raising him from the dead.
Acts 10:40-42
- God raised him from
the dead on the third day and caused him to be seen. 41 He was not
seen by all the people, but by witnesses whom God had already chosen--by us who
ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. 42 He commanded
us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one whom God appointed
as judge of the living and the dead.
Phil 3:21 - who, by the power that enables
him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so
that they will be like his glorious body.
1 Cor 15:42-54 - So will it be with the
resurrection of the dead. The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised
imperishable; 43 it is sown in dishonour, it is raised in glory; it
is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; 44 it is sown a natural
body, it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also
a spiritual body. 45 So it is written: "The first man Adam
became a living being"; the last Adam, a life-giving spirit. 46
The spiritual did not come first, but the natural, and after that the
spiritual. 47 The first man was of the dust of the earth, the second
man from heaven. 48 As was the earthly man, so are those who are of
the earth; and as is the man from heaven, so also are those who are of heaven. 49
And just as we have borne the likeness of the earthly man, so shall we bear the
likeness of the man from heaven. 50 I declare to you, brothers, that
flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable
inherit the imperishable. 51 Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will
not all sleep, but we will all be changed-- 52 in a flash, in the
twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead
will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. 53 For the
perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with
immortality. 54 When the perishable has been clothed with the
imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written
will come true: "Death has been swallowed up in victory."
Rom 8:18-22 - I consider that our present
sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. 19
The creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed. 20
For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by
the will of the one who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation
itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the
glorious freedom of the children of God. 22 We know that the whole
creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the
present time.
“he ascended into
heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father”
For the narrative of the ascension see Acts
1:1-11

I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4
You know the way to the place where I am going."

desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far;

right hand of the Majesty in heaven.

and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same
sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12 But when this priest

of God. 13 Since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his
footstool, 14 because by one sacrifice he has made perfect for ever
those who are being made holy.

in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his throne in

from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats
on his left.

you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks

sins of the whole world.

Rev 20:11-15 - Then I saw a great white throne
and him who was seated on it. Earth and sky fled from his presence, and there
was no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, great and small,
standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened,
which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done
as recorded in the books. 13 The sea gave up the dead that were in
it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was
judged according to what he had done. 14 Then death and Hades were
thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. 15
If anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into
the lake of fire.

once, and after that to face judgment,
Lk 16:24 - So he called to him,`Father
Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water
and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.'
Mt 18:8 - If your hand or your foot causes
you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life
maimed or crippled than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into
eternal fire.
Mk 9:47f - And if your eye causes you to

saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-- 9
not by works, so that no-one can boast. 10 For we are God's
workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in
advance for us to do.
Mt 25:34-40 - "Then the King will say to
those on his right,`Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your
inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35
For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave
me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I
needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in
prison and you came to visit me.' 37 "Then the righteous will
answer him,`Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give
you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite
you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you
sick or in prison and go to visit you?' 40 "The King will
reply,`I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers
of mine, you did for me.'

1 Cor 3:10-15 - By the grace God has given me, I laid a
foundation as an expert builder, and someone else is building on it. But each
one should be careful how he builds. 11 For no-one can lay any
foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12
If any man builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood,
hay or straw, 13 his work will be shown for what it is, because the
Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will
test the quality of each man's work. 14 If what he has built
survives, he will receive his reward. 15 If it is burned up, he will
suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the
flames.
Jn 5:22 - Moreover, the Father judges
no-one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son,
Jn
5:27 - And
he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man.
Jn 1:47-50 - When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching,
he said of him, "Here is a true Israelite, in whom there is nothing
false." 48 "How do you know me?" Nathanael asked.
Jesus answered, "I saw you while you were still under the fig-tree before
Philip called you." 49 Then Nathanael declared, "Rabbi, you
are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel." 50 Jesus said,
"You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig-tree. You shall
see greater things than that."

thoughts from afar. 3 You discern my going out and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways. 4 Before a word is on my tongue you
know it completely, O LORD.
Heb 4:15f - For we do not have a high priest
who is unable to sympathise with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been
tempted in every way, just as we are--yet was without sin. 16 Let us
then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy
and find grace to help us in our time of need.

judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself
but him who sent me.

Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his
appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: 2 Preach the
Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage--with
great patience and careful instruction.
Rm 2:4-5 - Or do you show contempt for the
riches of his kindness, tolerance and patience, not realising that God's

stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against
yourself for the day of God's wrath, when his righteous judgment will be
revealed.

condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,

others, who are asleep, but let us be alert and self-controlled.
1 Thess 5:8 - But since we belong to the day,
let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the
hope of salvation as a helmet.

and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.
Rm 12:19 - Do not take revenge, my friends,
but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: "It is mine to avenge;
I will repay," says the Lord.
