Church Going

As we cannot go to the church building, it is interesting to hear this poem read.

Mr Larkin is not necessarily all that one might hope for in a church goer. He is of course wrong to be sure there is nothing going on but I think he is on to several things:

An unignorable silence

An admission of ignorance

Stopping often but at a loss and wondering what to look for

Power of some sort or other

A special shell

A serious house on serious earth where our all our compulsions meet and are robed as destinies

Something which will never grow obsolete

A surprised hunger in ourselves by which we may gravitate to this ground which we once heard is a place proper to grow wise where so many dead lie around
