Are the kids snowflakes?
Yes, in some ways some of them probably are.
Yet some of their parents have been kidulting and maybe the
sins of the parents are being visited on their children and grandchildren.
No doubt in many ways the lives of the little dears are
pampered and protected with cotton wool. But they also face somewhat different
challenges.
There have been no golden ages.
But 1950 was a bit simpler. You could leave school early and
quickly get a decent job with honourable work and reasonable pay. Or you could
go to university for free with no debt.
Arguably there was less freedom for self-expression. But
perhaps it was a bit of a relief that there was a much more coherent and common
vision of the good, the true and the beautiful. There was less pressure to
invent, discover or curate some wonderful version of your individual genius. Not
everyone always lived up to the standards or society, or even their own standards,
of course, but there was more residual culture of Christendom in which one knew
what a woman was, and so on. The project of life may have been more limited for
many, but perhaps it was also less overwhelming and baffling.
